Safari Itinerary
Day by Day Breakdown of Your Adventure
Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you will be warmly welcomed by your representative and transferred to your Nairobi hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to rest from your journey or take a short excursion to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to see orphaned baby elephants being fed (afternoon session), or visit the Giraffe Centre for an up-close encounter with endangered Rothschild giraffes. In the evening, you will attend a comprehensive safari briefing with your guide, who will walk you through the 9-day northern and southern circuit ahead. You will overnight in Nairobi, preparing for the early morning departure into Kenya's wild north.
Day 2: Nairobi to Samburu – Into the Northern Frontier
After an early breakfast, you will depart Nairobi and drive north, crossing the equator and climbing down into the rugged, semi-arid landscapes of Samburu National Reserve. The journey takes you through small towns and dramatic scenery, with Mount Kenya often visible on your left. You will arrive at your lodge in time for lunch, located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River – the lifeline of this arid region. In the late afternoon, you will embark on your first Samburu game drive. This is a truly unique ecosystem, home to species you will not see anywhere else in Kenya: the Grevy's zebra (with its narrow stripes and large ears), the reticulated giraffe (with its distinct, honeycomb-like pattern), the Somali ostrich (with its blue-gray neck), the Beisa oryx (with its long, straight horns), and the gerenuk (a long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to eat leaves). You will also see elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs adapted to this harsh environment. As the sun sets over the red dust, you will return to your lodge for dinner under a canopy of stars.
Day 3: Full Day in Samburu – The Northern Five
Wake up early for a pre-breakfast game drive, when the northern wildlife is most active and the temperatures are cool. After sunrise, you will return to the lodge for a full breakfast. You will then depart with a packed lunch for a full day of exploration in Samburu. Your guide will take you deep into the reserve, following the Ewaso Nyiro River where elephants, crocodiles, and rare antelopes gather. You will have time to patiently search for leopards lounging in the riverine trees and cheetahs scanning the plains. The gerenuk, with its comical, upright stance, is a particular favorite among photographers. In the afternoon, you will find a shady spot for a picnic lunch before continuing your game drive. You may also choose to visit a Samburu village to learn about the culture of this proud, nomadic people who have lived in harmony with wildlife for centuries. As evening approaches, you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Samburu to Sweetwaters (Ol Pejeta) – Rhino Sanctuary
After breakfast, you will depart Samburu and drive south towards the equator, arriving at Sweetwaters Game Reserve (part of the larger Ol Pejeta Conservancy) in time for lunch. Sweetwaters is a private, fenced conservancy that offers a unique combination of wildlife and conservation education. After checking into your lodge, which overlooks a waterhole that attracts constant wildlife, you will embark on an afternoon game drive. Ol Pejeta is famous for its successful rhino breeding program, housing both black and white rhinos, including the last two remaining northern white rhinos on earth. You will visit the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a haven for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees from war-torn regions – the only place in Kenya where you can see these great apes. The conservancy also boasts excellent populations of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs. You will return to your lodge for dinner, with the waterhole lights illuminating visiting wildlife throughout the night.
Day 5: Sweetwaters to Lake Nakuru – The Pink Lake
After breakfast, you will depart Sweetwaters and drive south, crossing the equator once again and descending into the Great Rift Valley. You will stop at the iconic Rift Valley Viewpoint to gaze down at the sprawling floor of this geological wonder, with its volcanic craters and shimmering lakes. You will arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in time for lunch at your lodge, which offers stunning views over the soda lake. In the afternoon, you will embark on a thrilling game drive along the lake's alkaline shores. Lake Nakuru is famous for its seasonal flocks of flamingos, which turn the water's edge pink, as well as hundreds of pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles. The park is also a rhino sanctuary, offering one of the best chances in Kenya to see both black and white rhinos in a single afternoon. Keep your eyes open for lions lounging in acacia trees, leopards patrolling the forest, and Rothschild's giraffes browsing on the hillsides. You will return to your lodge as the sun sets over the pink-tinged lake.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha – Water, Walking & Wildlife
After a leisurely breakfast, you will drive a short distance to Lake Naivasha, a beautiful freshwater lake nestled in the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge, which likely sits on the shores of the lake offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. After lunch, you will take a boat ride on Lake Naivasha, drifting past massive pods of hippos wallowing in the shallow waters. You will watch pelicans fishing, African fish eagles diving for prey, and cormorants drying their wings. The cool breeze and the sight of giraffes and zebras grazing on the shoreline of Crescent Island create a serene, almost dreamlike atmosphere. For a truly unique experience, you may opt to disembark on Crescent Island for a guided walking safari, where you can walk safely among wild animals – giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and waterbucks – without the barrier of a vehicle. This intimate encounter with nature is a highlight of the entire journey. You will return to your lodge as evening falls, with the sounds of hippos grunting from the lake.
Day 7: Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara – The Great Theatre
After breakfast, you will depart Lake Naivasha and drive south across the floor of the Rift Valley, climbing the opposite escarpment before descending into the Masai Mara National Reserve. The journey takes you through the lush Loita Hills and the small town of Narok. Upon arrival, you will check into your safari camp or lodge and enjoy a hearty lunch. In the late afternoon, you will head out for your first Mara game drive. The plains stretch endlessly before you, dotted with acacia trees and teeming with wildlife. Within hours, you are likely to see herds of zebras and wildebeest, elephants, giraffes, and perhaps a pride of lions resting in the tall grass. As the golden African sunset paints the sky, you will return to your accommodation for a delicious dinner under a canopy of stars.
Day 8: Full Day in Masai Mara – Predators & Migration
Wake up early for a pre-breakfast game drive, when predators are most active and the morning light is perfect for photography. After sunrise, you will return to the lodge for a full breakfast, then depart with a packed lunch for a full-day safari adventure. You will explore the reserve extensively, reaching the Mara River – the dramatic crossing point of the Great Migration (typically July–October). Here, you may witness thousands of wildebeest and zebras braving crocodile-infested waters. Even outside migration season, the river is home to enormous hippos and crocodiles. For a truly unforgettable perspective, you may choose the optional hot air balloon safari at dawn, floating silently over the herds below, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. Your guide will find a shady spot for a picnic lunch before continuing the search for leopards, cheetahs, and elephants. In the late afternoon, you will make your way back to your lodge, having experienced a full day of Africa's finest wildlife spectacle. You may also opt to visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about the local culture and see their famous jumping dance.
Day 9: Sunrise Game Drive and Return to Nairobi
On your final safari morning, you will wake up early for one last sunrise game drive in the Masai Mara. This is the best time to see predators returning from their night hunts and the plains coming to life with the golden morning light. After this exhilarating final drive, you will return to your lodge for a full breakfast. You will then check out and begin your journey back to Nairobi, with one final stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint to say goodbye to the dramatic landscape that has been your home for nine days. You will arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon and be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight or to your city hotel, carrying memories of five distinct ecosystems and countless wildlife encounters.
