Safari Planning Guide

Setting out on a wilderness adventure is a transformative experience. Proper preparation is vital to ensuring your trip is as smooth as it is memorable. Milride Safaris provides expert guidance on everything from health protocols to the ideal seasons for animal sightings.

1. Investigating Your Safari Location

Choosing the right destination is the first step in planning your dream safari. Kenya and Tanzania offer distinct yet equally breathtaking landscapes. While Kenya is famous for the vast plains of the Masai Mara and its legendary hospitality, Tanzania boasts the iconic Serengeti and the majestic Ngorongoro Crater.

Consider whether you want a classic game drive-focused itinerary, an immersive cultural experience with local tribes, or a combination that includes a relaxing beach extension in Zanzibar or Mombasa. At Milride Safaris, we specialize in customizing itineraries that align with your specific interests, whether you’re looking for absolute luxury or a high-quality mid-range adventure.

2. Medical Readiness and Immunizations

Your health is our priority. We strongly recommend consulting a specialized travel clinic or your physician at least 6–8 weeks before your departure. Essential considerations include:

  • Vaccinations: Routine vaccines should be up to date. Yellow Fever vaccination is often mandatory, especially when crossing borders between Kenya and Tanzania.
  • Malaria Precautions: Most safari regions are in malaria-endemic zones. Discuss effective prophylactic options with your doctor.
  • Medication: Carry a basic first-aid kit including anti-diarrheals, antihistamines, and any personal prescriptions in their original packaging.
  • Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is highly recommended.

3. Visa and Entry Protocols

Ensuring your documents are in order is crucial. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and have at least two blank pages. Both Kenya and Tanzania now utilize electronic visa systems (e-visas) which should be applied for in advance. If you are planning to visit both countries, the East African Tourist Visa can be a cost-effective and convenient multi-country option. Always check the latest government portals for updated regulations.

4. Safari Logistics and Terrains

Traversing the African wilderness involves a mix of paved highways and unpaved bush roads. While the main routes are generally well-maintained, the interior of national parks can be rugged and bumpy—this is all part of the authentic safari experience! Our 4×4 vehicles are specifically designed to handle these conditions with ease. For those wishing to minimize travel time between remote parks, domestic “bush flights” provide a faster and incredibly scenic alternative.

5. The Milride Fleet

Our custom-built 4×4 Land Cruisers are the backbone of our operations. Engineered for safety and optimal wildlife viewing, they feature:

  • ✔ Guaranteed window seats
  • ✔ Large pop-up roofs for enhanced game viewing and photography
  • ✔ Long-range radio communication
  • ✔ Refrigerated cooler boxes
  • ✔ Charging points for cameras and phones
  • ✔ First aid and safety equipment

6. Lodging Varieties

Where you stay is as much part of the safari as the wildlife. We are not tied to working with any specific hotel/lodge. Clients are free to choose as per their preference and budget. We offer a range of properties categorized by:

Luxury Lodges/Camps

Premium amenities, spas, and gourmet dining in iconic locations.

Mid Range Tented Camps/Lodges

The classic safari feel with canvas walls, real beds, and en-suite bathrooms.

Budget Camps/hotels

Comfortable, clean, and well-located for those prioritizing the wildlife experience.

Tip: Staying inside the national parks allows for earlier game drives and more time with the wildlife.

7. Optimal Visiting Times

The Dry Season (June – October)

Peak wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. The grass is short, making spotting easier. This is also the time of the Great Migration.

Migration Season (July – September)

Witness millions of wildebeest and zebra braving crocodile-infested rivers in a dramatic display of survival.

Green Season (November – May)

Lush landscapes and fewer crowds. Excellent for bird watching and newborns. Occasional short rains refresh the air.

Calving Season (January – February)

Primarily in the Southern Serengeti, thousands of wildebeest calves are born daily, attracting high predator action.

8. Safari Weather

Equatorial weather can be surprising. While days are generally warm and sunny, early mornings and late evenings can be quite chilly, especially in higher elevations like the Ngorongoro Crater or the Masai Mara. We recommend dressing in layers (the “onion method”).

9. Professional Safari Guides

A great guide makes a great safari. Milride Safaris takes pride in our team of professional guides who are not just expert drivers, but passionage wildlife trackers and storytellers. Fluent in English and deeply knowledgeable about local ecosystems, they are trained in the highest standards of safety and conservation, ensuring your journey is both educational and respectful to the environment.

10. Drinking Water and Food Safety

Rest assured that food and water safety are strictly managed. We provide unlimited bottled drinking water in all our vehicles. The lodges and camps we partner with prepare high-quality meals using fresh, local ingredients. Most dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) can be easily accommodated if we are notified in advance.

11. Park Fees and Government Charges

To support conservation, all visitors must pay park entrance and conservation fees. In most cases, Milride Safaris includes these fees in your all-inclusive package, so you don’t have to worry about daily payments at the gate. These funds go directly toward protecting the animals and the habitats you have come to see.

12. Transfers and Domestic Flights

Your journey starts the moment you land. We arrange all airport transfers and interior logistics. For those on a tight schedule or looking to avoid long road journeys, we can integrate domestic flights between major hubs like Nairobi, Arusha, the Mara, and the Serengeti, ensuring more time spent in the wild and less on the road.
